New York, Sep 3 (EFE).- American Taylor Fritz stunned German Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals of the US Open on Tuesday and will play his first Grand Slam semifinal.
World number 12 Fritz defeated Zverev, ranked fourth in the ATP rankings, 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) in three hours and 26 minutes of play at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows.
Without Serbian Novak Djokovic (No. 2), Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz (No. 3) and now Zverev (No. 4), the men’s draw at this surprise-filled US Open only has two top-5 players in the competition: Italian Jannik Sinner (No. 1) and Russian Daniil Medvedev (No. 5), who will face each other in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Fritz had already beaten Zverev in another ‘major’ this year: Wimbledon, where the German was eliminated in the round of 16 after having won the first two sets.
Zverev, who on Tuesday scored one of the points of the tournament with a spectacular pass along the side of the net that fell just on the line, ends his ‘grand slam’ season without having yet won the first title of his career and after having played in the final of Roland Garros in 2024 (he lost to Alcaraz) and the semi-finals of the Australian Open (he lost to Medvedev).
The German was a finalist at the US Open in 2020, where he lost the title to Austrian Dominic Thiem.
Fritz will face the winner of the quarterfinal match between American Frances Tiafoe (No. 20) and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (No. 9) in the semi-finals of the New York Grand Slam.
