China promises Africa billions in loans at summit

Xi promised the approximately 50 African heads of state and government that they would establish partnerships in the military, education and training, trade, agricultural development and renewable energy sectors, among others. China wants to hold military exercises with African states, set up green energy projects and send medical personnel to Africa, Xi explained. China also promised to further open its market to Africa and promised duty-free trade.

Xi’s speech was met with much applause. Subsequent speakers, such as the President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and Cyril Ramaphosa from South Africa, thanked China for its efforts.

China has invested billions in large infrastructure projects in Africa over the years. Many countries have benefited from this, while others have been unable to repay Beijing’s loans and have become dependent on the People’s Republic. According to experts, China hopes that the cooperation will give it access to important raw materials in Africa and to markets, as well as support from countries at an international level. China is already considered the most important trading partner of many African countries.
