Georgi Cholakov, who is acting director of the National Film Center, on Monday called a press conference because of the scandals surrounding the feature film session. “We are not crooks,” he declared. And he clarified that there is no conflict of interest with him, since his company “Geopoli”, in which he does not participate since he was acting boss since March, does not present a project in the competition. Another legal entity, Geopoli Film, has applied for a state subsidy. According to Cholakov, there is nothing wrong in extending the deadline for accepting projects by two weeks, and the only candidate with obligations to the state, who made a mistake in the crowd, was removed.
All this, however, creates an inequality between the money and fame exploits, claims the 22-year-old producer Rositsa Karadjova, who filed a complaint with the Administrative Court even before the results of the session became clear. It is not by chance that on Monday BTA again tried to lynch her script – the audio recording of the meeting of the national artistic commission was released, at which all experts spoke negatively about “Armagan-Death Valley”. Many of them reject it with regret, since “the subject of the tragic fate of the Bulgarian refugees from Eastern Thrace at the beginning of the 20th century is very important, and there is no film on the subject”. “I am answerable to other people, and because of this girl, I will not resign. And the court has not ruled yet,” commented Cholakov.
As is known, the scandal, which has been simmering for years, broke out when Evgeny Mihailov copied 120 pages of Genoveva Dimitrova’s evaluation cards. Nevena and Milena Andonovi filed complaints against him. So the money for this session – about six million BGN, which should be spent in 2015, remains blocked until the decision of the magistrates. If the funds are not used, they will return to the state budget – but as long as they are missing even on paper, the producers cannot look around Europe and America for the remaining 20% of the funds they need. Cholakov also shared that he does not approve of the way the commissions are composed and that it is best for playwrights to evaluate the texts.
