More infections in summer 2024

Peine. There have been no corona restrictions for more than a year and a half. The pandemic is officially considered over – but that does not mean the virus has disappeared. On the contrary, the number of reported cases has recently increased again. There have also been more corona infections in the Peine district recently.

There has been an increase in reported cases since June, says Fabian Laaß, spokesman for the Peine district administration. This may be due to the travel season and events such as shooting festivals that took place in the summer. This could have caused the virus to spread. 50 corona cases were reported across the district in August, 60 in July and 23 in June. Before that, there were significantly fewer, explains Laaß – just two in May, one in April and six in February.

Results of tests conducted at home are not reported

“It should be noted that the reported numbers come from doctor’s offices or care facilities. The results of tests carried out at home are not reported to the health department, so the number of people infected here is likely to be even higher,” the spokesman stressed. At the beginning of the pandemic, even suspected cases of illness were reportable.

However, it is still mandatory to report if a person has died from or with a corona infection. “It should be remembered that not every patient receives a swab when they visit a doctor or an inpatient facility. This means that there may also be under-reporting here,” explains Laaß. In the Peine district, four corona deaths have been registered so far this year. In 2023 there will be a total of 205 deaths.

Although the number of corona cases is currently somewhat higher, and winter is approaching, in which there could be a renewed increase, the district administration is not currently planning to reactivate the corona crisis team and the test centers, says the spokesperson. As with other diseases, the same applies in the case of a corona infection: If you are ill, you should stay at home and limit your contacts. There is no longer an obligation to test for corona or to be tested, says Laaß. The same applies to wearing a mask.
