Wout van Aert did not sustain any fractures in his crash during the sixteenth stage of the Vuelta a España. This has been announced by his team Visma | Lease a Bike. The Belgian is suffering from a deep wound. It is still unclear when he will be able to wear a race number again and whether he will even be in action this season.
“Wout van Aert did not sustain any fractures from his fall in the Vuelta a España,” Visma | Lease a Bike begins its statement on X. “The three-time stage winner had to withdraw due to severe knee pain caused by a deep wound. This requires intensive care. Wout will travel back to Belgium to continue his recovery there.”
How long his recovery will take is not yet known at this time. It is therefore still unclear whether Van Aert can defend his chances at the upcoming international championships – with the European Championships and the World Championships.
The road race at the European Championships in Hasselt and surroundings will take place on Sunday 15 September, exactly two weeks later (Sunday 29 September) it is time for the World Championship road race in Zurich, Switzerland.
