Commitment to culture and sport

The event SPORTS UNITED This year, the event once again shows that sport brings people together – and not just through the sporting activities themselves. A decisive factor is the commitment of the numerous volunteers, whose efforts make the major event on September 7, 2024 possible in the first place.

In recent months, the SPORTS UNITED organization team launched a call for volunteers, which was answered by almost 40 people from Chemnitz and the surrounding area. “The response from the volunteers was overwhelming,” said Tina Rothämel from the C³ Chemnitz event centers at the joint team briefing in the stadium on Gellertstrasse on September 3rd. “We are very grateful that you are working with us to organize SPORTS UNITED! Without your commitment, this extensive event would not be possible,” continued the project manager.

The helpers come from different age groups, some of them have already been active in previous years as part of the event or as volunteers at the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH. Next Saturday they will support the SPORTS UNITED team in the areas of event logistics, visitor service, marketing or project organization and at the same time be part of a special Capital of Culture project.

Daniel Fugmann, Managing Director of the Chemnitz City Sports Association and project manager of SPORTS UNITED, emphasised: “Sport is not just commercial sport or club sport, it can also bring people together. Doing sport together is a completely different feeling and the many volunteers are proof that sport can bring people together.”

About SPORTS UNITED:

SPORTS UNITED celebrated its premiere on September 4, 2022. The new event format was organized in cooperation with the Chemnitz City Sports Association, several sports clubs, players and C³ Chemnitzer Veranstaltungszentren GmbH. The event is a project of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 GmbH and is intended to bring together all people with a love of sport and exercise. The focus here is by no means on the performance character, but rather on the valuable sense of community, which on the one hand invites exchange with other people and on the other hand is able to overcome social divides. SPORTS UNITED is intended to offer many participants the opportunity to actively contribute to the Capital of Culture year through sport – whether as a club, private individual or recreational athlete. In 2024, the sporting event will take place for the first time in the stadium at

Gellertstrasse and will be expanded with SPORTY to create a large, unique sports day that will allow visitors to experience the Chemnitz sports scene in all its facets and bring sports enthusiasts together. SPORTY has already taken place five times in the stadium on Gellertstrasse since 2019 and in 2023 attracted over 5,000 sports enthusiasts to the Chemnitz stadium to try it out and take part.
