It took 1,043 days since his last victory in September 2021, but Marc Márquez was back on the top step of the podium this Sunday. The Spanish rider, six-time MotoGP world champion, won the Aragon Grand Prix in Spain today, a victory that takes him to sixty Grand Prix in his career and leaves the fight for the World Championship open.
It was the final touch to a prodigious weekend, with a clear dominance from the official Friday practice sessions, pole position and victory in the sprint race on Saturday, and a resounding victory on Sunday. It puts an end to almost three years of suffering, falls, injuries and poor results, which led Márquez to take the drastic decision at the end of last year to change his lifelong Honda for a Ducati that is not even official.
“A fantastic race. It’s incredible to win in front of the fans. It was difficult to stay focused on the bike in the last 10 laps,” explained the rider from Cervera, a Catalan town less than two hours by road from the Motorland circuit where the race was held. Márquez, 31, dominated the race from start to finish and crossed the finish line standing on his bike, exultant, with his compatriot Jorge Martín second and the new leader of the World Championship after the fall of the Italian Francesco Bagnaia, who had led the classification since his victory in the German Grand Prix in July.
“I’m happy for Marc, for everything he’s been through in these three long years,” Martin said at the end of the race. Young prodigy Pedro Acosta, 20 years old and also from Spain, completed the podium at the Motorland circuit. With nine races left in the championship, the standings are wide open, with Martin the new leader, with 299 points, 23 ahead of Bagnaia (276). Marquez moves up to third place, with 229 points, one more than the Italian Enea Bastianini. These are the four riders who can fight for the MotoGP World Championship.
