Human rights office calls on Mexico to prevent disappearances – 2024-09-03 19:05:09

The Office in Mexico of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights The United Nations (UN) called on the Mexican State on Friday to strengthen protection against the disappearance of persons and promote solutions that victims and their families deserve.

In a statement released within the framework of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearancesthe UN-DH “respectfully” encouraged the Mexican State, especially the elected authorities, federal and state, “to adopt a vigorous agenda that protects all people from disappearances and promotes the solutions that victims and their families deserve.”

She said it was “crucial” that the rights of victims be recognized and that their voices be heard with the attention and empathy that respect for their dignity demands.

He also encouraged all efforts by the authorities to be consolidated into a state policy “and to be translated into tangible results.”

The UN-DH also identified 10 priority issues that it considered appropriate to strengthen, including ensuring the right to participation of victims of disappearance, providing them with adequate care and comprehensive reparation.

It is also important to ensure the effective protection of all searchers from the risks and attacks they face; to strengthen the National Commission and the state search commissions, including their citizen councils, forensic institutions and human identification institutions.

Adequately and diligently investigate crimes related to the disappearance of persons; continue to strengthen coordination between the authorities responsible for search and investigation, ensure that public servants have suitable profiles and that there are necessary resources in the institutions.

In addition to developing and implementing a national strategy for the prevention of disappearances, with a focus on citizen security and based on respect for and protection of human rights.

In addition, it calls for further training efforts for judicial personnel, ensuring the effective functioning of the tools provided for in the General Law on the subject; reinforcing work for truth, justice, memories and historical clarification, and promoting the implementation of recommendations from international human rights organizations.
