Titanic shipwreck loses iconic railing: ‘Metal eaten away by microbes’

The End of the Titanic

The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912 after hitting an iceberg during its maiden voyage. The ship broke in two and sank in the cold North Atlantic in the early hours of the morning. Of the approximately 2,224 people on board, only 706 survived because there were not enough lifeboats.

The disaster led to major changes in maritime regulations, including improved safety requirements and more lifeboats on ships. The wreck of the Titanic was not discovered until 1985, more than 70 years after the disaster.
