Readers of the hit comic book series The Arab of the Future (Éditions Allary) are in for a nice surprise. Although the saga is over, Riad Sattouf will stay in the same universe with the first volume of The Arab of the Future: I, Fadi the Stolen Brother (Books of the Future), which focuses on the author’s brother.

By retaining the title The Arab of the Futurethe paternity with the original series of this spin-off is beyond doubt, and Riad Sattouf assures that this new comic strip — which he has been preparing for 10 years — will allow “ shed a whole different light ” on The Arab of the Futuregiving the floor to Fadi, who already appears in some volumes of the comic strip. This new album is expected in bookstores from October 8, and Riad Sattouf will take advantage of the release to do a big signing tour throughout France.

This is also a way for the author to continue this great family saga — and to imagine other spin-offs as well? — alongside his other successful series, including the essential Esther’s Notebooks (Éditions Allary), which recently ended. The first volume of Me, Fadi the brother stolen will cover the period from 1986 to 1994, and will follow the life of Fadi, who is abducted and educated by his father.

More precisely, it was revealed at the end of the fourth volume that Riad’s father, now deceased, had left his French wife without warning, and had left permanently for Syria, kidnapping their third son. It was only a few years later, and on the occasion of the sixth and final volume of The Arab of the Futurethat Riad Sattouf will see Fadi again, but he will have forgotten their mother’s language and left behind his memories of France.

The success of The Arab of the Future

With The Arab of the FutureRiad Sattouf recounts his childhood and adolescence between Libya, Syria and France. In six volumes, the author makes the connection between his heritage, his education and his desire to become an artist, without ever ignoring the most delicate subjects, including the kidnapping of his brother Fadi by an increasingly religious father.

The last volume, covering the period 1994 – 2011, was released in 2022 and offered The Arab of the Future a particularly successful and touching conclusion, making the work one of the great comic strips of the 21st century.
