After the Ukrainian offensive in Kursk, Russia is advancing in eastern Ukraine. This is why Zelensky is being criticized. But he says: “We have to bring the war home, to where it is being brought to Ukraine from.” All news about the war in Ukraine in our news ticker.
Next Russian general arrested for corruption
16:54: Following numerous corruption scandals in the Russian military apparatus, investigators have arrested another general for allegedly accepting bribes on a particularly large scale. The deputy commander responsible for material equipment in the Leningrad Military District, Valery Mumindzhanov, is said to have accepted 20 million rubles (around 200,000 euros) for concluding contracts.
This is the fifth arrest of a general amid numerous uncovered scandals in which high-ranking military officers, including former Deputy Defense Minister Pavel Popov, are said to have enriched themselves while in office.
The major general, who previously worked in the Ministry of Defense in Moscow, is said to have signed contracts worth a total of 1.5 billion rubles (around 15 million euros) for the supply of uniforms – including for soldiers fighting in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. In return, he is said to have received the bribe. Investigators said that several properties in the cities of Moscow and Voronezh worth a total of more than 120 million rubles (around 1.2 million euros) were found in the possession of the general and his family. The legality of the purchase is now being examined.
The Kremlin has repeatedly denied that the dismissal of Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu in May was a deliberate purge campaign. “This is systematic work by the security forces, constant work,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said last week about the arrest of former Deputy Defense Minister Pavel Popov.
Selenskyj: Russia must “feel the war”
Monday, 02 September, 04.40 am: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj has condemned his military’s recent drone attacks against targets in Russia described it as a necessity. “The terrorist state must feel what it is like to wage war,” said Zelensky in his evening video message.
Ukrainian combat drones attacked targets on Russian territory on Sunday night, including in the capital Moscow. The planning staff in Kiev is now working to bring as many Russian military facilities, Russian logistics and critical parts of their military economy within the reach of Ukrainian weapons as possible. The constant Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and especially on civilian targets have now led to the fierce counterattacks. “We must bring the war home, to where it is being brought to Ukraine.”
Kremlin does not believe in Trump’s quick mediation success
13:17: The Kremlin does not expect a quick mediation success in the war against Ukraine if Donald Trump becomes president again in the USA. “I do not believe that there is a magic wand. It cannot be done in a day,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Russian television. He was commenting on claims by the former president and current Republican candidate Trump that he could end the Russian-Ukrainian conflict within a day.
Nevertheless, Peskov toyed with the idea. One could imagine “that the next president of the USA will announce in his inauguration speech that the USA is committed to peace and will therefore stop supporting Ukraine,” said the spokesman. “Then perhaps by the next morning something will change in thinking, especially in Kiev.” Peskov added in the interview for the program “Moscow. Kremlin. Putin” that this was all purely hypothetical.
The USA is already very much part of the conflict through its arms deliveries to Ukraine, said President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman. The relationship between Moscow and Washington is therefore worse than it has been for decades. Officially, Peskov stuck to the line that Russia does not favor anyone in the election campaign between Trump and the candidate Kamala Harris of the Democratic Party.
Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion for two and a half years. It has received arms aid from many Western countries, but not enough to change the military situation in its favor. All of Moscow’s demands for an end to the war more or less amount to Ukraine’s capitulation.
Ukrainian drones set fire to Moscow refinery and bomb power plants
10.38 am: According to Russian sources, massive Ukrainian drone attacks have hit a refinery in Moscow and two power plants. A fire broke out at the Kapotnja refinery in the southeast of the capital, but the fire brigade was able to contain it after some time, the state news agency Tass reported.
Attacks were also officially confirmed on a power plant on the southern outskirts of Moscow and on a power plant in the Tver region, about 100 kilometers northeast of the metropolis. Russian online media published unconfirmed videos suggesting that there were fires in these plants as well. Debris from drones fell in the Moscow area, as Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported on Telegram.
The Defense Ministry in Moscow announced that 158 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight over 15 different Russian regions. The number cannot be independently verified, but it is the highest number reported for a Ukrainian drone attack to date. Russian troops invaded Ukraine two and a half years ago on the orders of President Vladimir Putin. With its long-range weapons, Russia has also largely destroyed Ukrainian power plants. Ukraine does not have such weapons. However, it is defending itself with large numbers of drones that attack Russian industrial facilities.
Selenskyj demands permission for attacks on Russian military airfields
09.29 am: President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has again appealed to Western partners to give Ukraine permission to attack Russian military airfields. In a video address, Zelensky said: “Clearing Ukrainian airspace of Russian guided bombs is an important step to force Russia to seek an end to the war and a just peace.” This demand comes after recent Russian air strikes on Ukrainian cities, including Kharkiv, in which several people were killed and injured.
Zelensky stressed the urgency of support from Western partners, especially the United States, Great Britain, France and Germany. “We must be able to provide real and comprehensive protection to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people,” Zelensky continued. “We need long-range permits, and we need your long-range missiles and rockets.” However, so far Western countries have refused Ukraine permission to attack targets on Russian territory with heavy weapons. Therefore, the Ukrainian military is forced to attack Russian targets with specially produced combat drones, which, however, have a lower explosive power.
Meanwhile, heavy artillery attacks were reported in the Sumy region, where at least 15 settlements were shelled. There is no official information about the Ukrainian offensive in the western Russian region of Kursk. At the same time, Ukrainian media reported massive Russian attacks on the Ukrainian-occupied town of Sudzha in the Kursk region. The town, which was declared Ukraine’s military command for the region, is being systematically destroyed by the Russian military, although only a few residents still live there.
