Bulgaria and Romania do not have secured funding for a third Danube bridge – 2024-09-03 01:40:44

/ world today news/ The construction of a third bridge over the Danube between Bulgaria and Romania has no secured funding. This is clear from the answer of Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski to Bulgarian MPs, reported a BGNES reporter.

However, the two countries have already started preparatory procedures for the construction of a bridge between Nikipol – Turnu Magurele. Design proposals for the construction of the bridge will be collected until June 2015.

On May 5, 2015, in Bucharest, a working group between Bulgarian and Romanian experts agreed that the two sides would prepare a common application form to apply for financing the feasibility study for the construction of a bridge between Nikopol and Turnu Magurele. The funds can come under the Program for cross-border cooperation between Bulgaria and Romania, from where it is possible to allocate up to 1.5 million euros.

“Subsequently, suitable sources of financing will be sought for the actual construction, with an indicative value of around 208 million euros,” added Moskovski. Alternative sources of financing will most likely be funds from the state budgets of both countries or a loan from an international banking institution. It is unlikely that the third bridge over the Danube will be built with European funding.

From the written response of the Minister of Transport, it is also clear that the intention of Bulgaria and Romania to build a fourth bridge over the Danube, which would connect Silistra and Klarash, remains for now only on paper.
