“It was an important and festive event. There was no sadness, on the contrary, we should feel very happy and proud to participate in this transformation process,” said the president, stressing that his administration, which covers the period 2018-2024, has made significant progress.
In his report, López Obrador highlighted achievements such as an average annual growth of 1% in the gross domestic product (GDP), the reduction of 9.5 million people in poverty, and an 18% decrease in the daily average of homicides, from 101 to 83.
The president described the event as “very fraternal” and “loving,” stressing that continuity with change is essential. He said he felt at ease leaving the presidency in the hands of Sheinbaum, whom he described as an exceptional, intelligent and honest woman.
“Imagine the peace of mind I feel because I am going to hand over the presidential sash to an exceptional woman. I am leaving very calm,” he said.
López Obrador emphasized that he has laid the foundations for the transformation of the country after facing “36 years of a policy of pillage and plunder.” He also expressed his confidence that Sheinbaum will be “the best president in the world” and highlighted his satisfaction with the change in the presidency.
With the Grito de Independencia ceremony on September 15 as his last mass event in the Zócalo, the president is preparing to retire from public life, concluding his presidency on a positive note.
