Bulgaria ranks last in Europe in terms of music sales – 2024-09-02 10:20:21

Bulgarian record companies sold a total of 600,000 copies of music on CD, compared to 1 million for the previous year.

Physical sales of music in Bulgaria fell by 40% in 2009 compared to 2008, according to a new report by the International Music Industry /IFPI/, the Bulgarian Association of Music Producers announced.

The only category in which Bulgaria ranks higher is that of income from performance rights. The reported $2.1 million represents the sums that the collective management company PROFON has collected. Our country is in the 33rd position out of 43 countries for revenues from the rights to public performance of music /clubs, restaurants, hotels/ and broadcasting rights /televisions, radio stations/.

For the first year, IFPI reports digital sales in Bulgaria – they are worth 0.7 million dollars, and 70% of them are from content related to mobile phones /36 percent from mastertones and 34 percent from ringbacktones/. Online streaming accounted for 27% of digital revenue and 3% was “other”. In terms of revenues from digital music sales, our country is in 44th out of 50 positions in the world, with two European countries following us – Slovakia and Croatia.

According to the origin of the repertoire, the share of Bulgarian music is only 12%, foreign music – 83%, the classical genre – 2%, and compilations – 3% of the market. 57% of the revenues of the Bulgarian recording industry are from physical sales /discs and cassettes/, 32% – from performance rights, and 11% – from digital sales /basic content for mobile phones/.
