On Saturday late afternoon, a fire broke out in terraced houses on ul. kard. Karola Wojtyły on the Biała housing estate in Rzeszów. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in the fire – one person was slightly injured. However, there are significant material losses.
The fire brigade received a report of the fire at 5:45 p.m. Several – probably 7 – terraced houses were on fire. Several fire brigades and over 80 firefighters participated in the extinguishing operation. The fire was brought under control relatively quickly, and the source of the fire was located. The fire is currently being extinguished.
According to the fire department, the probable cause of the fire was the explosion of a cylinder connected to a gas grill.
UPDATE I
The State Fire Service in Rzeszow confirmed that the initial findings indicate that the cause of the fire was the explosion of a gas cylinder in a grill located on one of the terraces of the terraced house. Yesterday, the fire was extinguished until late at night, after which demolition work was to begin. Services and experts are also on site to inspect the scene. 7 out of 8 terraced houses have almost completely burned down. There is a risk that the burnt premises will only be suitable for demolition.
Fortunately, no one was hurt in the fire, because the residents – about 20 people – managed to evacuate on their own.
This is how the Rzeszów City Hall summed up the Saturday and Sunday events:
The action to extinguish the fire in terraced houses on Wojtyły Street ended at around 4 a.m. Over 80 firefighters from the State Fire Service and Volunteer Fire Departments took part in it. The city established a crisis team which has been working on site since yesterday. It consisted of employees of the Crisis Management Department, the City Guard, the Municipal Social Welfare Centre, Konrad Fijołek, the Mayor of Rzeszów and Krystyna Stachowska, the Deputy Mayor. Their task was to provide emergency assistance to the injured residents. A city bus was provided in which one could take shelter, drink water and rest for a while, and accommodation was also secured for the injured, but all of them took shelter with their own families. The places are still available if needed. A psychologist is available to the residents. The Mayor spoke with Teresa Kubas-Hul, the Voivode of Podkarpackie Voivodeship, during the night regarding the payment of benefits to the injured.
The Municipal Social Welfare Centre in Rzeszów provided meals at night to the firefighters taking part in the operation.
Tomorrow the Building Inspectorate will begin work to determine whether the building can be renovated.
UPDATE II
There are growing doubts as to whether the cause of the fire was indeed the explosion of a cylinder connected to a gas grill. As firefighters unofficially say, the cause of the fire, which currently seems most likely, is a leak in the installation.
The final cause of the fire will be determined by fire experts who, together with the police and prosecutor, are already working at the scene.
