Matcha: the discreet passion of Aloïse Sauvage

The genesis of a passion

For years, Aloïse Sauvage has been passionate about Bubble tea, but she eventually got tired of this drink and set her sights on matcha. In her work and in her personal life, she is led to meet professionals and friends in bars. But she does not drink alcohol and was not passionate about the alcohol-free menus that were offered to her. “I am very coffee, I am very ‘snack’, I like to enjoy a good drink. I love everything that is Japanese culture, I had the chance to go to Japan in 2017 and I fell in love with matcha! There they make lots of things with it, sweets, pastries, I was won over by this taste!”

A special taste

Aloïse Sauvage is aware of the “bashing” around matcha. There is a lot of criticism on social media for its taste of earth or seaweed, its green color and its texture. What she likes about this Japanese green tea is “the different layers of taste, I drink lots of different ones, I see when they are stronger or sweeter, I like this sweet side at the beginning then bitter… it speaks to me in the image, we don’t have access to everything right away, especially with people or in our art, we have to look for complexity, I like the different layers.” Every time she travels, Aloïse Sauvage enjoys tasting matchas from all the countries she visits.

An obsession with green

When she was a teenager, Aloïse had repainted her room green. She was, I quote, “in a frog phase”. “I was doing breakdance and people called me the frog, I was very flexible and I had a passion for this color so I put it on my walls with a picture of a frog. Green was a color that was banned for a long time in theater or cinema because of the famous green screens intended for special effects, but I want color and I want hope so long live green!” What Aloïse Sauvage likes most in places that serve matcha is the warm atmosphere, the pastries that come with it, for her, it’s a kind of social rite…

Culinary passions

Bubble tea, mochis, matcha, when the artist likes a drink or a dish, she gets stuck on it for years. It was her father who passed on this passion for cooking and this curiosity to taste everything. As a dancer, circus performer and actress, the body has a great importance in her life, she does not think she has developed eating disorders “but I had a very engaging relationship with food, I had phases where I was too careful, I was too restrictive and sometimes I had bulimic impulses and sometimes dysmorphia, but currently it’s going well, even if I like to have an athletic body, a little toned, a little dry. At the moment I am in a hibernation phase so I have a very pleasant little layer, which in my opinion, will melt as soon as it is time to get back on stage.”

Aloïse Sauvage will be on the bill for Reda Kateb’s first film “Sur un fil” on October 30. She will play a circus performer who discovers the world of laughter doctors and clowns in the hospital and she will deliver her new songs in 2025.
