With a rousing kick-off event and an informative press conference, the newly founded Donau Versicherung BFV Women’s Regional League was officially launched on Saturday, August 31, 2024. This ambitious project marks a significant step for women’s football in Burgenland, a region that has unfortunately not yet been in the spotlight of national women’s football.
Women’s football has enormous potential
The event was led by Nina Potz, ÖFB Admiral Bundesliga Manager.
The focus of the press conference was first on stage with Gerhard Schneebacher, regional director of Donau Versicherung, Georg Pangl, president of the Burgenland Football Association and state sports councillor Heinrich Dorner. In his speech, Georg Pangl emphasised that Burgenland had been a “blank spot” in terms of women’s football. “Something had to change that!” said Pangl. He wished all the players lots of fun working and training and hoped that the new league would launch some football careers in Burgenland. “Women’s football has enormous potential, also in Burgenland, and that must be shown!” he said, fully convinced that this league will enrich football in Burgenland in the long term.
“Danube Insurance = Women Power!”
Gerhard Schneebacher from Donau Versicherung added: “Donauversicherung = women’s power! Women’s football and Donauversicherung, they just fit together!”. His excitement for the upcoming games was palpable, and his support for the league shows that women’s football has the right insurance.
“Something’s happening!”
State Sports Councillor Heinrich Dorner was also enthusiastic about the developments in women’s football. “Fortunately, a lot has happened in the last few years when it comes to women’s football! We have to give women’s and girls’ football the stage they deserve! SOMETHING IS HAPPENING! And I think that’s great!” said Dorner, who emphasized the importance of this initiative for the entire region.
Numerous motivated actors
In addition to the main speakers, other important players in Burgenland football were also on stage, including Oliver Zens from 11teamsports/Derbystar, as well as the players Marlene Schindler, Katrin Unger, Pia Frischmann and Hannah Schwartz. They all contributed to the celebratory atmosphere and made it clear that the league is supported by a broad network of supporters.
Exciting draw
A highlight of the event was the draw for the first matches of the league in the kick-off game that followed. This resulted in some exciting pairings:
– Group A: FC Deutschkreutz against Group B: SC Neusiedl am See
– Group A: SC Bad Sauerbrunn against Group B: SC Frauenkirchen
– Group A: SV St. Margarethen against Group B: ASV Draßburg
This draw promised exciting games and emotional moments in advance. As the saying goes: “A day without football is a lost day!” and that also applies to women’s football in Burgenland.
Cultural & social milestone
The first championship round will take place on September 7th/8th, 2024, and everyone involved is already looking forward to this date. The start of the Donau Versicherung BFV Women’s Regional League is not only a sporting event, but also a cultural and social milestone that shows that women’s football has arrived in Burgenland and has a bright future ahead of it. One thing is certain: “Football is like chess, only without dice” – and there will be many exciting moves to watch in the Donau Versicherung BFV Women’s Regional League this season!
