Dresden. The Greens have entered the final stretch of their state election campaign with a plea for the expansion of renewable energies in Saxony and attacks against the AfD and BSW. Economics Minister Robert Habeck said on Friday at the closing event in the Rundkino in Dresden that the expansion of wind power was essential for the competitiveness of the economy and thus for prosperity.
He accused Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) of damaging Saxony’s manufacturers of electric cars and batteries by singing the praises of diesel vehicles. Instead of falling into “political confusion” out of fear of populists, it would be better to “straighten your back” like the Greens, said the minister to great applause from the audience.
Habeck described his party as a counterweight to authoritarian and populist groups. The tradition of the East Greens, who were founded as Alliance 90, emerged from the tradition of the round tables in the GDR. The Greens in East and West do not form a closed formation, but consist of different political voices. This fundamentally distinguishes them from the BSW and Sarah Wagenknecht, who joined the SED in 1989 and “handles democracy with rubber gloves”. He accused the BSW and AfD of corruption. “They are paid. We know that and it is disgusting.”
The Green Party’s top candidates in Saxony, Katja Meier, Wolfram Günther and Franziska Schubert, warned of setbacks in climate protection if the Greens do not get enough votes to participate in the government on September 1. They spoke out in favor of continuing the current coalition “as a corrective to the CDU.”
The “threatening scenario”, a three-party parliament made up of the CDU, AfD and BSW, would mean major disadvantages for Saxony’s economic development, education and climate protection. Schubert defended German support for Ukraine as part of the Greens’ value orientation.
Meier received great applause for her call to maintain the fundamental right to individual asylum. Asylum law and cooperation in the EU against terrorism must become more effective, but her party rejects “fear-mongering”.
