I bow deeply to the memory of the Apostle of Freedom – Vasil Levski, because what I want to say are sprouts from the seeds he sowed in the soil of our common spirituality.
Pressure, racketeering, coercion and threats aim at the restoration and “democratic” legitimation of neo-Ottomanism. The game is wa bank!!! It would not be a surprise to me if there is a transfer of conflict and confrontation in the Balkans and in Europe. Because on 16.04.2017 in neighboring Turkey they have a referendum on the transformation of the Kemalist Republic of Turkey into a Sultanate. Madness. But it’s a fact…
This is what the honorary leader of DPS Ahmed Dogan says in a special message.
“This Unifying patriotism is significantly different from European and regional nationalisms in that it does not raise ethnonation as an end in itself or as a fundamental condition for the consolidation processes in society. Classical nation-states arose on this basis. Bulgarian Unifying patriotism in today’s current political times is based primarily of the need for the Togetherness of difference, not the elimination or unification of otherness and difference in the “designated pot” of the ethnonation and the monolithic nation-state. And for this political process there are external and internal circumstances and factors:
The outside world, of which we are a part, is dynamic and unstable. We are witnessing a geopolitical displacement of traditional layers of the power system on a planetary scale. This state of global political weather creates a sense of uncertainty and anxiety.
Circumstances and motivating factors in our inner world are related to superimposed problems in connection with the prolonged difficult Transition, which unnecessarily partisans and parcels the public political space. The lack of consensus on the main priorities of the country and the chaotic change of elites is one of the main reasons that we are now paying a high social price with low standards, poverty and crazy populism.
The development of public consciousness and self-awareness, and in particular national self-awareness, was not designed on the dynamics of national interests. The option of the vision for the future of Bulgaria had as a horizon our inclusion in NATO and the EU. Of course, this was the right strategy and it was implemented.
But the over-expectations for supposed efficiency had a negative impact on the value foundation and activity motive of the National Self-Consciousness. In everyday consumption, the conceptual phrase “National Self-Consciousness” is an abstract cliché, used primarily for commercial political purposes of part of the country’s elite. In this ticklish thematization, the conceptual-categorical terrain is very slippery. For this, I proceed from the understanding that the deep bearer of civic consciousness and self-awareness is a “working” National Self-Awareness. Because it is a protective mechanism of the Whole in crises and critical situations for the country. In other words, it is a political methodology for the objectification of civic self-awareness in life from the standpoint of national interests. Therefore, the strategic design of the matrix of National Self-Consciousness is intended to guide our perception, thinking and evaluative-selective ability to choose what is good or bad for society and the state not only from the point of view of the present, but also in a historical perspective.
This is a more complex and time-consuming approach, because it implies: a vision for the development of the world and the region, as well as multivariate modeling of the various geopolitical targets from the standpoint of the sustainable development of Bulgarian national interests.
In the last few decades, I have often asked myself the question: Why do pro-nationalist formations not have a precisely defined concept of their most important tool for “awakening”, “impacting” and “directing” the unifying national energy in the formula “National Self-Consciousness”?! Even in the first years of the transition, I launched the idea of the need for “moderate and intelligent Bulgarian nationalism”, which is actually part of the fabric of the national self-awareness of all European countries. Unfortunately, I was not understood… And now Fate is knocking at the door…
European and regional nationalisms are based on peak situations in History, ie. in the past, and are coded to pump up the archetypal memory of ascent, or traumas of historical decline or fall. Both lead to division, opposition and the search for historical revenge, especially in the Balkans. What I observe in the pre-election profiles of the various political parties, to put it mildly, baffles, disturbs and worries me.
In the EU, it is difficult to find a distinct or significant territory that is not the “former” of close or more distant neighbors. Not to mention the Balkans… Then what is it about? For the right of the former, or for the right of the latter?
Or for the right to temporarily reside in a certain territory, according to political upheavals, or the vagaries of historical time? If this contrived understanding becomes the guiding political principle for the restoration of the “former possessions”, surely the world order is headed for complete collapse. Bulgarian statehood began with Khan Asparukh. And the right of the latter is the modern Bulgarian state, a member of the EU. I am a citizen of this country and my choice is definite because it is deeply motivated. And any attempt to edify, or to claim my country as a “former territory”, affects my national self-awareness and my vision for the future. No one can claim rights for such thinking and behavior!!!
If such a claim is the right of the stronger, history teaches us that the ranking is not a constant quantity. Because it itself gives rise to its own negation in the face of the Wailing Wall, but subsequently also of Togetherness as a counteraction to the cause…

And now We – both Christians and Muslims and all ethnicities – are able to give a historical lesson to all who imagine that they have the historical right to supervise and guide us. Each of us must define ourselves by making our own inner choice. Each of us must experience our historical catharsis. Otherwise, a very high existential price is paid for the state of “cross-legged standing”, and for generations… In this I see the power of the birth of Unifying patriotism. It is a rare phenomenon because it only awakens when there is a general danger to the Whole! There is no way to fight poverty, low living standards and lack of readiness for mutual trust if the destructive energies of disunity, opposition and hatred are raging in our souls!
One Earth gave birth to us, one Earth nourishes, comforts and develops us. One Earth creates problems for us if we don’t take care of it Together. Let’s trust her! Our earth is more ancient and wiser than all of us who use its resources. And precisely in this is the tenacity of the National Self-Consciousness over time. Knowing that time is in Us, let’s show the world that We are also in Time!”, says Ahmed Dogan’s message.
