Mexico City. The Morena faction in the Chamber of Deputies confirmed that Ifigenia Martínez y Hernández will preside over the Board of Directors and, in an immediate election, that the vice president will be Sergio Gutiérrez Luna, who already headed that political leadership body.
Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar was ratified, during the plenary session of the bench, as vice coordinator of the group.
After her appointment, Ifigenia Martínez recalled her role as one of the precursors of the Democratic Current of the Institutional Revolutionary Party in 1998, which gave way to the recently defunct Party of the Democratic Revolution.
The economist and acting senator will chair tomorrow the Board of Deans, which will install the 66th Legislature of the chamber, and on September 1 the Board of Directors that will receive the last presidential report of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
On October 1, he will place the presidential sash on Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
On this matter, she told her colleagues this afternoon: “It is a historic moment in the public life of the country, especially for women. Being appointed by consensus of all my colleagues to carry out the transfer of Federal Executive Power and therefore, to hand over the presidential sash, is the result of a long struggle for the democratization of our nation.”
She said that, if in 1998 she was a precursor of the democratic movement, and now that Sheinbaum is the president-elect, “it is a great privilege that fills me with pride. It is an honor for me to serve from the highest platform.
I will live up to this high office, with a parliament always open to dialogue and pluralism, but, above all, for the benefit of the entire Mexican population.”
He also thanked Morena for their historic vote and invited the Monera deputies to behave with respect and maintain their commitment to the people.
Later, the party entered into a vote to define the vice presidency, a process that was extended because each of the 221 Morena deputies present deposited ballots in a ballot box and then the counting was carried out.
Gutiérrez Luna, who was known for using the plenary hall to play a game with soccer player Luis Hernández, or to call a forum on the UFO phenomenon, obtained 153 votes, while Dolores Padierna Luna received 58.
In the absence of Ifigenia Martínez, the Chamber will be led by Gutiérrez Luna.
