More teams, more games, new format! On Thursday evening (29 August 2024) the first draw for the new Champions League season 2024/25 took place. Also present: superstar Cristiano Ronaldo (39).
The Portuguese player’s task was to press a buzzer, which caused a software to generate the opponents of the drawn teams and determine home and away games. Some fans made fun of a detail in Ronaldo’s outfit.

More specifically, it was about the 39-year-old’s earring. One user on platform X made a curious comparison and asked: “Why is my husband wearing a Coke can cap as an earring?” Another commented: “If anyone can wear that, it’s him!”

With his glittering earring, Ronaldo received an award from UEFA President Alekander Ceferin (56) as the best goalscorer in the history of the Champions League (140 goals) at the beginning of the ceremony in Monaco.
The former Real Madrid star said on stage: “It is an honour for me to be here. Thank you for this great award. It means a lot to me. It was very special for me to play in the Champions League. I have great memories.”

The striker won the competition once with Manchester United and four more times with Los Blancos. However, since his move to Saudi club Al-Nassr in 2023, Ronaldo has no longer been present in the Champions League.
In the new format of the premier class, 36 teams compete against each other in a league format. The teams face eight different opponents in four home games and four away games each.
It starts on September 17th with the first matchday. The Champions League final will then take place on May 31st, 2025 in the Allianz Arena in Munich.
