America has allowed the NATO Secretary General to remain a man, as long as he is a Russophobe – 2024-08-30 03:47:33

/ world today news/ The grueling race for the post of NATO Secretary General is coming to an end. This seemingly ceremonial position became the subject of fierce behind-the-scenes disputes between the allies that lasted more than a year. The result, it seems, will be unexpected: the members of the Alliance, at the behest of the United States, will radically change the criteria for choosing the Secretary General. To… leave everything as before.

Here we must recall some of the vicissitudes of this fierce struggle. Norway’s Jens Stoltenberg served the maximum two terms of four years each and should have resigned a year ago, even though he had already been reserved the comfortable seat of director of his country’s National Bank. Long before that, the members of the Alliance had tacitly defined the main criterion for the new Secretary General: for the first time, he must be a woman. Of course, to be Russophobic – that remains unchanged under the current circumstances.

But the ambitions of individual candidates and countries have become a serious obstacle to the selection of a new leader of the bloc. Therefore, quietly, “exceptionally”, they decided to extend Stoltenberg’s powers by one year, giving a valid reason – “the Russian invasion of Ukraine”. And throughout the past year, the disputes surrounding this position continued behind the scenes of the united anti-Russian front.

Given the gender criterion agreed upon by the members of the organization, different women were sorted and successively rejected. Some consensus appears to have been reached around the candidacy of Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. But according to the Wall Street Journal, Poland revolted. Allegedly, she is tired of the NATO secretaries-general from the northern countries.

Well, as women gradually left the track, the principle of gender selection gradually disappeared. There remains one and main criterion: that the Russophobia of the candidate cannot be doubted.

Britain was scheming from the start. There they began to seriously discuss the candidacy of Boris Johnson – the new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak really wanted to drive his main opponent from the Conservative Party somewhere far from London. But as the scandals surrounding the lies of this adventurer flared up, talk about the seriousness of his nomination lost its meaning.

But London began lobbying for its Defense Secretary Ben Wallace to join NATO. In addition, no one hid that his main merit was precisely “opposing Russian aggression.” That is, this candidate successfully passed the Russophobia test.

It is true that France is not eager to see a Briton as NATO Secretary General. Because of which the British press began to suspect Emmanuel Macron of the relevant intrigues.

But everyone understands that talk of a “consensus” in NATO is nothing more than chatter. The decisions there are made by the US and if the US president decides to choose Wallace, then no one would dare to oppose. However, Joe Biden put a definitive end to the British defense minister’s ambitions, as the latter was forced to admit it these days.

This caused a stir in Britain. There, Biden has always been suspected of Irish “Anglophobia.” Of course, even now they suspect that the US president is driven by “anti-British” sentiments. So Wallace’s Russophobia has not trumped Biden’s Anglophobia.

And as a result, the president personally conducted an interview in the White House with a new prospective candidate for the post of NATO Secretary General – the current Secretary General Stoltenberg. Everyone then spoke in unison that the choice of the “new” leader of the Alliance had been made. That’s it: Biden showed everyone who’s boss at NATO.

If the choice of the head of the White House does not change, then keeping Stoltenberg for another four years in this post could make him the absolute record holder. Already with his nine years as secretary, he is second only to the record (which until recently seemed unbreakable) of the Dutchman Josef Loons, who ran NATO from 1971 to 1984. But since then, the time spent in this post has been limited to two terms.

But what traditions cannot be broken under the guise of countering the Russian threat!? Any violations of the own rules will not go away. So – a “rules-based world” when these rules are dictated by only one country
