UN: Call for de-escalation of tension in Libya – 2024-08-29 14:16:15

The UN Security Council on Wednesday expressed concern over the escalation of tension in Libya over the country’s central bank, urging all actors in the country to avoid actions that could destabilize the situation or undermine confidence and further worsen institutional divisions and discord in the north African country.

Members of the Security Council called on political and military leaders to build consensus and resolve the crisis that has erupted over the Central Bank of Libya following the removal of its governor and to avoid military actions that could jeopardize stability, civilian security, as well as the 2020 ceasefire agreement.

They stressed the importance of honoring commitments under Security Council resolutions, the Libyan Political Agreement, the so-called Libyan Political Dialogue Roadmap and the new electoral legislation, agreed by the so-called 6+6 Committee. They further underlined the need for full participation of women, youth and civil society in the political process.

The Security Council further expressed its support for the national sovereignty, independence and unity of Libya.
