Large film program for the special exhibition “Glückauf – Film ab!” starts on September 1, 2024
Accompanying the large special exhibition “Glückauf – Film ab! Cinema and film history of the Ruhr region” will start on 1.9.2024 the extensive film program with Events at the Glückauf film studio, at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein and in various districts of EssenOutstanding feature films and documentary film treasures paired with prominent guests and audience discussions promise a cinema experience of the highest class.

Sunday matinees at the Glückauf film studio
In the Glückauf film studio on Rüttenscheider Straße, from September 2024 to March 2025 an 25 Sundays outstanding Feature films from the last 100 years shown that were filmed in the Ruhr area or that deal with the milieu and typical characters. These include, for example, the silent film drama “S1”, a spy film from 1913, the melodrama “The Precocious” from 1957, the historical film by Visconti “The Damned” from 1969, “Jede Menge Kohle” from 1981, the classic “Manta – The Film” or the award-winning film adaptation of Kerkeling’s autobiography “The Boy Must Get Some Fresh Air”. The film screenings are introduced and accompanied by special guests, including well-known filmmakers. In addition to the main film, short films and selected historical film and television reports are also shown. The film series takes place in cooperation with the Essen arthouse cinemas and the Filmkunst und Kinokultur Essen e. V. association. It is sponsored by Stadtwerke Essen AG.
Documentary film evenings
And the Film evenings at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein and in Filmstudio Glückauf become from October in cooperation with the Cinematheque in the Ruhr area rarely shown documentary film treasures of the last 120 years presented. Under the expert moderation of Paul Hofmann, rare samples from the region’s rich film heritage will be shown. This will be followed by audience discussions. The series of events will focus on documentary film as the oldest film genre in the Ruhr region. The 13 evenings will show films from the most recent days of documentary filmmaking in the region as well as moving images of the overwhelming industrial backdrop, which soon became a sought-after motif for filmmakers. The Nazi and post-war eras as well as the end of coal mining are also topics in the series of events.
Traveling cinema of cultures
As part of this series, a total of five events will be held by September to December selected films in various districts of Essen and at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein in a cozy Living room atmosphere The following will be shown: Film classics in original language with German or English subtitles. In addition to two Turkish and two Greek films, one Ukrainian and one Spanish film can be seen. Music, drinks and snacks round off the film experience.
