Volkswagen announced Monday that it will equip its vehicles with the AirConsole video game platform, starting in September. The first models to benefit from it will be the electric creations ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.7, as well as the Golf, Passat and Tiguan.
Wait before contacting your dealer, however, as the feature will only be available in Europe initially. No mention was made of the North American market during the announcement.
We can guess that it will come.
BMW already offers the AirConsole platform with some of its products, such as the most recent 5 Series.
And what does this platform allow? Essentially, playing video games on the vehicle’s multimedia screen, including in multiplayer configuration, using a smartphone as a controller.
It is important to note that the game is possible when the vehicle is stationary. This is a way to pass the time during charging sessions, in particular, or when waiting for someone who is doing an errand.
AirConsole is an app developed by the Swiss firm N-Dream. According to its website, it currently offers 137 games, some of which are exclusive to it. And variety is in the spotlight, with educational games (quizzes, word games), as well as classics like Tetris, and some that look a lot like Nintendo’s Mario Kart.
The games are free to play, but subscriptions are available and offer benefits such as being able to connect to more players, skip commercial breaks, enjoy more games, etc.
