The typhoon has reached the island of Kyushu, where more than 12 million people live.
Japanese authorities have declared a “special warning” on the island, which is applied rarely and only for the most damaging storms. Warnings have been issued for high winds, landslides, widespread flooding and other damage.
The meteorological service warns of wind speeds of up to 70 meters per second. The amount of rain per day can even exceed 600 mm.
Electricity supply on the island was also seriously disrupted.
People are being warned to stay at home, as the strong wind carries even roof tiles through the air. In the previous days, the authorities asked almost a million people to evacuate from the most dangerous areas, and those who stayed were warned that rescuers might not reach them during the typhoon.
