Beirut, New York (Al-Ittihad)
Yesterday, the United Nations Security Council unanimously agreed to renew the mission of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for another year. UNIFIL patrols Lebanon’s southern border, which it shares with Israel. UNIFIL was established in 1978, and its mission is renewed every year, and its current mission was expected to end next Saturday.
Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati expressed his country’s gratitude to the members of the Security Council for their tireless efforts in renewing UNIFIL’s mandate, as the renewal “is necessary to maintain stability in southern Lebanon.”
Mikati said in a statement: “The UN Security Council recently voted unanimously on the decision to extend the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for an additional year. ”
He reaffirmed Lebanon’s “commitment to work closely with UNIFIL to address the challenges and threats facing stability in the south. He also renewed Lebanon’s commitment to implement relevant international resolutions, to specifically Resolution 1701.”
