Next Friday, September 6, Saturday, September 7, and Sunday, September 8, the ATA BEKHO 2024 Pan American Taekwondo Tournament will take place at the Riesco Space in the capital. On this occasion, a group of Rancagua residents are getting ready to be present at the international competition.
The instructor of this group of children and young people, Martín Abarca, welcomed us at the Ansco Club in the city, where this martial arts academy holds training three times a week.
He said, “Since Chile is hosting the Pan American tournament, delegations from Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Peru and other countries are coming, as well as a delegation from the United States.” He added, “We are bringing 18 competitors, including children and youth, who compete in formula, controlled combat and direct combat with weapons.”
The ages of the Rancagua natives range from 8 to 18 years old, but in the tournament there will be children from 2 years old to athletes over 50 years old. Regarding how his team takes this Pan American meeting, Abarca said that “it is super important, we come with the reference of having already had several national champions, in the categories mentioned.”
He also stressed that, so far, “we have a total of 3,500 competitors.” In other words, it will be a celebration for Taekwondo lovers.
“The competition is open and clearly those who feel most motivated have signed up. On this occasion we have 18 students who will represent us as the BEKHO O’Higgins academy.”
Currently, the group led by the fourth dan master is made up of 60 students, from 4 years old onwards. Regarding their training, these are Tuesday and Thursday mornings for adults, and the same days for the younger ones, with the entire group joining on Saturdays.
