A small child dies as a result of an accident involving three cars in Hamburg-Billstedt. Several people are injured. Were two of the vehicles involved in an illegal car race?
The traces of the serious accident in Hamburg-Billstedt, in which a two-year-old child died, is dramatic: The wreckage of three vehicles lies over a distance of more than 50 meters, burst airbags hang in the destroyed cars, a broken stroller lies on the street.
According to initial findings, a 22-year-old and a 24-year-old were driving their cars on Schiffbeker Weg in the direction of Billstedt when a 40-year-old woman turned onto the road in her family van, police reported. Her car collided first with that of the 24-year-old and then with that of the 22-year-old. The latter swerved, left the road and damaged several trees on the side of the road.
Two two-year-olds in the car – one dies shortly afterwards
Six people were injured in the accidents. The two-year-old, who was initially critically injured, died a short time later in hospital. In addition to the deceased toddler, his twin brother and his mother were also seriously injured. The two drivers involved in the accident and a 23-year-old passenger escaped with minor injuries.
70 firefighters and rescue services on site
Although the vehicles were badly damaged, according to the fire department, all occupants were able to be freed from the vehicles before the fire department arrived – passers-by provided first aid.
The fire brigade and police were at the scene of the accident in large numbers. 70 fire and rescue service personnel were on duty for around three hours. “It’s always a very confusing situation at the beginning,” said a fire brigade spokesman in the evening. The team then quickly brought order to the chaos and the injured were treated immediately.
Employees of the German Red Cross crisis intervention team were also at the scene of the accident and looked after the victims of the accident and their families. The emergency services and fire department also deal with such accidents, the spokesman continued. “Traffic accidents involving children, especially seriously injured children, are very close to the hearts of the emergency services. They are given pastoral care afterwards if necessary.”
Was it an illegal car race?
The police are now investigating whether the two young men may have been involved in an illegal car race with their fast cars.
