Cucumbers are currently in short supply in Iceland. A viral trend on the social media platform Tiktok is said to be responsible for this. With a massive increase in recipes for cucumber salad, the vegetable has gained considerable popularity, as “SRF” reports.
In particular, influencer Logan Moffitt, also known as the “cucumber guy,” is considered to be the trigger. His recipe videos have been viewed millions of times.
Cucumber sales at record high
Icelandic supermarket chain Hagkaup confirmed to the BBC a continued increase in cucumber sales, but clarified that there is typically a shortage of Icelandic cucumbers during this time of year.
The Icelandic Vegetable Growers’ Association (SFG) also stated that farmers were having difficulty meeting the increased demand.
Several factors for cucumber shortage
According to SFG, some farmers are currently replacing their plants and are generally seeing an increase in orders after the summer holidays. This situation suggests a number of different factors that could contribute to the current shortage of cucumbers.
What do you think? Can a viral trend really cause a cucumber shortage?
Regardless, the question remains whether the cucumber shortage was actually triggered by a viral Tiktok trend or whether it is simply the product of seasonal fluctuations.
