SYRIZA: The “87” are weighing the facts and looking for a presidential candidate – Arvanitis is not an issue – 2024-08-27 09:55:47

The extraordinary meeting of the Parliamentary Group dominates today’s SYRIZA news coverage. With Stefanos Kasselakis having been in Crete for some 24 hours, the MPs received a message on their mobiles yesterday to be in the Senate chamber in the Parliament at 6 pm today. The information they have is that Stefanos Kasselakis will speak to them, probably online.

SYRIZA says that the purpose of the meeting is to plan actions for the next Parliamentary term, which starts on Wednesday.

Yesterday, the president of SYRIZA called on the executives of Koumoundourou to “lower the tone and not feed the systemic media, which rely on the dissolution of SYRIZA for their interests”, stressing that “the public debate about the party has become morbid”. It remains to be seen whether he will move on the same wavelength today.

“Any invitation is welcome”

“Stefanos Kasselakis does not want to trouble the people of SYRIZA any more […] However, as long as there is a challenge – an invitation to challenge him and this takes an official form, any challenge addressed to him is welcome… And in this case, the procedures will be initiated,” SYRIZA’s press representative, Voula Kehagia, said yesterday. In fact, commenting on the interview of Pavlos Polakis in Documento, he emphasized that “whatever has to be done will be done in the Organs”.

After all, the president of SYRIZA, a few days ago, openly challenged those who wish to question him institutionally.

At the moment, the scenario of submitting a motion of impeachment against the president of SYRIZA to the Central Committee on September 7 seems the most likely. Pavlos Polakis has already expressed his intention to “do everything he can” for “big changes”, while the majority of “87” executives are on the same wavelength.

They formulate their strategy

Immediately (some even left open the possibility for today) the “87” team is expected to be convened. It will likely meet first with its informal steering committee, followed by a full session.

The “87” are unexpectedly expected to submit a motion of censure to the Central Committee. But in order to do this, they must obviously have found the candidate they will support. Among others, the names of Famellos, Faradouris and Arvanitis have been heard.

“I can’t stay away”

“I cannot remain uninvolved in this decay… The thousands of our fellow citizens who honored me and with whom I talk every day, want initiatives from all of us,” Nikolas Faradouris said yesterday to documentonews.gr.

“I do not belong to any group, nor am I supported by any group. I have always been institutional and my positions are always expressed in the foreground, publicly and with sincere anxiety for the future of the party and the country,” he said verbatim, leaving all possibilities open.

“No” from Arvanitis

Colleagues of Kostas Arvanitis stressed to documentonews.gr that the head of the SYRIZA Eurogroup does not intend to enter any debate, nor does he have ambitions to claim the presidency.

It is recalled that the MEP has assumed the position of Vice-President of the Eurogroup of the Left for the first half of the term and the position of Co-President for the second half.

“It is not possible for him to be vice-president of Left and at the same time president of a party… He has a fresh mandate from 19 European delegations of the Left and he will honor it. After all, he doesn’t talk to anyone in the background” people close to Kostas Arvanitis told us.

Famellos and Pappas

Not even Sokratis Famellos has expressed his intention to run for the presidency even though he has many supporters in the “87” group. On the other hand, Nikos Pappas is keeping his cards closed for now…

“Members’ Movement” in favor of Kasselakis

The new grouping, which made its appearance yesterday in the internal party landscape of SYRIZA, is taking on the characteristics of a trend.

“We can no longer stand idly by, seeing specific executives and groups within our party who, in close cooperation with the party bureaucracy, are methodically gnawing away at both President Mr. Stefanos Kasselakis and the very project of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance, for which we have put up a huge fight since 2012” states among others the “Members’ Movement” in its text, which until yesterday had been signed by over 870 members of the party, among them members of the Central Committee and coordination officers from Prefectural and Member Organizations across Greece .

“The headquarters should remain with expatriates”

The Member organizations of Belgium, Bulgaria, North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany), Hesse (Germany), the United Kingdom and Ireland, the United States of America, Cyprus and Scandinavia co-signed a text requesting that the seat of Othon Iliopoulos go to Stefanos Kasselakis.

“The resignation of Othon Iliopoulos for personal reasons, whom we thank and honor for his offer, and his desire to be replaced by the other expatriate Greek on our ballot, namely the President of SYRIZA-PS, Stefanos Kasselakis, not only reflects the will of the thousands of voters of our party, and especially the emigrants, but it constitutes a supreme act of political courage and empathy, of the desire of our base” they state among others.

However, SYRIZA says that no one has been asked to resign, while the information is converging that Popi Tsapanidou is expected to be sworn in as an MP. After all, before Stefanos Kasselakis is Georgetta Lali, who belongs to the New Left and who has said that she will keep the seat in case she is given the choice…
