The terrible summer of Marmolada, with the thermometer above zero for over 50 days

It’s another terrible summer for the health of the Marmolada and its glacier. For 52 days the thermometer has not gone below zero on the summit of the massif between Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige. The last negative figure, -0.9 degrees, was observed at Punta Penia (3,343 meters) on July 5th.
The data was processed by Flavio Tolin, head of the M3V Odv association – which has weather detection tools in Punta Penia – and of the ‘dolomitimeteo.it’ project.
On some days the minimum temperature approached the zero degree threshold, without however falling below. With the forecast of a freezing level still above 4,000 meters above sea level, Tolin observes, it is likely that the situation of values above zero will continue in the next 7-8 days. Worse data than the summer of 2023 which, for example, had recorded on August 28 a minimum of -1.6 and a maximum of +3.8, and before that, on August 7, 2023 a minimum of -7.9 degrees.
Despite these anomalies, it is noticeable how the summit glaciers are still covered by residual snow, as if in an extreme effort of resistance of the Marmolada against the loss of its white mass.
