Apple Podcasts is no longer the most used podcast app

Apple Podcast was the most used podcast app for years. However, it has now fallen from its number 1 spot to number 3. The percentage of weekly podcast listeners on Apple’s app has dropped from 30% in July 2019 to just over 10% today.

In case you didn’t know, Apple has had a podcast app since the beginning of podcasts. The Californian apple was the first app to broadcast them, the name podcast itself coming from “iPod Broadcast”.

The concept was invented in 2000 by an mp3 player manufacturer, i2Go, which offered an online service for downloading audio stories and news. However, Apple made it mainstream thanks to the iPod.

Today, Apple is no longer the king of the podcast app world. Its app has been overtaken by YouTube and Spotify. The study conducted by Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights shows that YouTube has become the most popular podcast listening platform in the United States. 31% of survey respondents say they use YouTube and 21% say they use Spotify. Only 12% said they use Apple Podcasts.

However, Apple still leads if we count “downloads” rather than “listeners.”

Still, I still find Apple Podcasts super convenient compared to other apps, but I have to admit that competitors have made great efforts to offer easily accessible content in a convenient app.
