Moth outbreak begins to spread, community urged to unite to prevent further spread

Kurnia Dwi Artanti, Lecturer in Epidemiology, Faculty of Public Health (FKM), Airlangga University (Unair) emphasized the importance of preventing the spread of monkey pox virus or Monkeypox (Mpox) in Indonesia.

In addition, the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) has reported a spike in Indonesian Mpok cases. That is, until mid-August, there were about 88 confirmed cases of Mpox in different regions. Along with the increase in cases, WHO has also declared the status of Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

“PHEIC is a standard that shows how bad the global situation is. WHO decided this status because it saw the spread of the disease increasing,” he said, Monday (26/8/2024).

This disease can be prevented by maintaining personal hygiene, including getting used to washing hands with soap and running water after activities in public places.

In addition, it is also important to wear a mask, because it can be an effective protection against the spread of the virus.

At the same time, if someone has been infected, he stressed the importance of self-isolation, so that the virus does not spread again.

“WHO and CDC also recommend giving vaccines, giving priority especially to laboratory workers, health workers at referral hospitals and populations at risk,” he said.

These precautions are important to take, considering the risk that the Mpox virus can spread between people through direct contact with body fluids.

The symptoms that appear on their own are similar to those of common chicken pox, which include a high fever, a distinctive rash on the skin and swollen lymph nodes.

“The rash usually appears on the face and then spreads throughout the body. “Nevertheless, special tests are needed to diagnose Mpox infection because this virus is self-limiting, which means it can heal on its own if the body’s immune system is good,” he said.

With global threats, he reiterated the need for self-awareness and adequate anticipation, to reduce the risk of spread.

“The response and support from WHO member countries is also an important factor in controlling the spread of this disease,” he concluded. (ris/saf/ipg)
