President Andrés Manuel López Obrador blamed the delay in the intercity train “El Insurgente” on the mayor of Álvaro Obregón, PAN member Lía Limón. Despite this, he emphasized, “here it goes.”
“We had some obstacles, as in all projects. Some were due to technical issues, they are complex projects; and other delays, because we had to face our opponents, the conservatives, who every time we do a project try to stop it, to slow it down, they put obstacles in our way.
“We had problems because they stopped us, there was a conservative government in the Álvaro Obregón delegation (mayoral office), still good, but they put obstacles in our way and stopped the work. However, there it goes, it goes anyway,” said the president at the morning press conference on Thursday where a report on the progress of the work was presented.
He said that the second stage of the project, which runs from Lerma to Santa Fe, over 29 kilometers, will be inaugurated in the coming days.
The train, whose first phase, from Zinacantepec to Lerma (with four stations), was inaugurated on September 15 of last year, will have a length of 58 kilometers of double electrified track, said the head of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation, Jorge Nuño Lara.
He indicated that in this second phase, which is about to open, a fifth station, Santa Fe, will be opened, and Vasco de Quiroga and the Observatorio terminal will still be pending completion.
Once fully completed, there will be 20 trains in operation, each with five carriages and a capacity for 718 passengers.
The trip, from Zinancantepec to Santa Fe and vice versa, explained the Secretary of Public Works and Services of Mexico City – who was appointed by the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum as the next head of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation – Jesús Esteva Medina, will take 37 minutes, and the cost will vary, depending on the distance, ranging from 15 to 90 pesos.
The official added that the bus journey time can be between 110 and 150 minutes, while the average price is 106 pesos.
