/ world today news/ In eight months, Bulgaria will have to solve the challenges facing the European Union. We will have our commitments and propose our topics, but our policy, especially during the Bulgarian presidency, must be guided by the understanding that Europe is not a given once and for all and we must fight to regain our values.
This was stated by Vice President Iliyana Yotova at an international conference “Where Europe is Going: Globalism vs. Populism”, reported the press office of “Dondukov” 2.
According to Iliana Yotova, concrete solutions are needed to overcome the most dangerous risks – Dublin must guarantee justice in solving the refugee crisis, Brexit must protect the interest of the European citizen, Europe must have its defense union, fight for its leadership place in the world for cohesion policy to be upheld. “The topic today is not the place of one or another country in the European Union, the topic is how we continue the European Union itself,” the vice president pointed out. “The best strategy against demagoguery and populism in Europe is working solutions, and we can provide them only if we are together,” underlined Iliana Yotova.
The Vice-President congratulated all those who contributed with their work and bold decisions for one of the oldest civilizations and cultures in Europe to be today in the big family of member states.
Bulgarian and European politicians, experts, representatives of the academic community and the non-governmental sector participated in the international conference. The forum aims to provoke a broad public discussion and is organized by PanEurope – Bulgaria, the State Cultural Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Representation of the European Commission in Bulgaria. Within the framework of the conference, three topics were discussed: “Bulgaria in the EU: 10 years later”, “Globalism versus populism” and “Political priorities of the first Bulgarian presidency of the EU”.
