Word of the Bishops of Erfurt, Dresden-Meissen and Fulda
In a joint letter, the bishops of Erfurt, Dresden-Meißen and Fulda address the communities in the Free State of Thuringia regarding the election of the Thuringian State Parliament on September 1, 2024:
Dear Thuringians,
Dear sisters and brothers,
We look with great gratitude at the people whose commitment 35 years ago made a significant contribution to the fact that we can now live in freedom in a constitutional state. Our democracy has been put to many tests since then. Today we are experiencing a multitude of very complex problems that cause concern and fear in many of us. Seldom in recent decades have the challenges been as great as they are today.
On Sunday, September 1, 2024, there will be state elections in Thuringia. Let us exercise our right to vote! Let us use our vote to strengthen a democracy that faces the current challenges in a constructive way. Let us strengthen a politics that, both in its decisions and in its dealings with one another, is committed to the principle that was deliberately placed at the beginning of our constitution 75 years ago: “Human dignity is inviolable.” This value applies to all people, regardless of their origin, their background and their beliefs.
Especially in these turbulent times, we Christians are challenged to discover the image of God in every person, and especially in all those in need, and thus to recognize their dignity. Let us make this mission that we have as Christians strong with our voices.
With blessings and warm greetings of solidarity
Dr. Ulrich Neymeyr, Bishop of Erfurt
Heinrich Timmerevers, Bishop of Dresden-Meissen
Dr. Michael Gerber, Bishop of Fulda
