(Geneva = Yonhap News) Correspondent Ahn Hee = The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned travelers to be careful as Oropophyllum fever, a viral disease transmitted mainly by bites from mosquitoes, spreading in South America.

According to WHO on the 26th (local time), as of last month, 8,078 confirmed cases of Oropuchitis have been reported in five South American countries since 2023. Among the countries where outbreaks have been confirmed are Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Peru, and Bolivia, and two deaths were reported.

Oropuchi fever, which is caused by the bite of a mosquito or shellfish carrying the Oropuchi virus, causes symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain.

There is no specific vaccine or treatment, and no cases of human-to-human transmission have been confirmed.

WHO explained that although it happened often in the Brazilian Amazon region, the number of positive cases has been increasing rapidly in South American countries this year.

In particular, it is spreading even in countries where no cases have been reported, such as Bolivia, with 160 confirmed cases and 1,000 suspected cases this year.

There have also been cases of direct infection where the infection is transferred to the fetus. In Brazil, one fetal death and one miscarriage were reported, and four cases of microcephaly in newborns that appeared to be related to the Orofuchi virus were also reported.

This month, many cases of Oropuchitis were confirmed in Europe among travelers who had visited South America. The European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) said that 19 cases of Oropuchal fever infections caused by travel to South America have been confirmed in Spain, Italy and Germany.

WHO said, “The reason the outbreak, which was largely confined to the Brazilian Amazon region, spread to other countries is believed to be because climate change, deforestation and urbanization have opportunity for the disease to spread.”
