season and the San Francisco 49ers tied the Las Vegas Raiders 24-24 at Allegiant Stadium. It was a very exciting game with many highlights where several starters played and provided good moments. In addition, the players who are still fighting for a spot on the team gave a good effort to increase their chances of achieving their goal.
Purdy and the Starting Offense
Once again, quarterback Brock Purdy saw action like he did last week in the second preseason game, but this time for longer and he was also joined by more of his starting weapons. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. and tight end George Kittle made their preseason debuts and accompanied Purdy throughout until all three exited with 12 minutes left in the second quarter.
Purdy generally moved the ball well, leading two drives where the 49ers scored a field goal and a touchdown. The field goal came first when kicker Jake Moody connected on a 49-yarder. On that drive, Samuel Sr. caught a 27-yard pass from Purdy and Kittle caught a 15-yarder.
Purdy then put together a 12-play, 85-yard drive, taking up 7:19 of the clock. Kittle caught a crucial pass on that 19-yard drive that brought the 49ers to midfield. It was on that drive that running back Jordan Mason scored his 4-yard rushing touchdown. Purdy was very effective overall, completing 9 of 12 passes for 96 yards.
Allen y Dobbs
Quarterbacks Brandon Allen and Joshua Dobbs continued to battle for second place behind Purdy. Allen took the field first and completed 5 of 7 passes for 60 yards. He didn’t throw a touchdown and didn’t have an interception. Then, on his night of work, Dobbs managed to complete 8 of 10 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. The quarterback who had to close out the game was Tanner Mordecai who completed 2 of 4 passes for 59 yards.
Newbies in Attack
There were also two rookies who stood out on offense today. Wide receiver Jacob Cowing caught Dobbs’ 10-yard touchdown pass and finished his workday with three receptions for 39 yards, his longest reception coming in at 19 yards. On the ground and special teams, running back Isaac Guerendo looked very good in his preseason debut. The Louisville rookie ran for 32 yards on 11 carries and his highlight came when he returned a punt 93 yards to the Raiders’ five-yard line, which helped set up running back Patrick Taylor Jr.’s three-yard rushing touchdown a few plays later.
Outstanding Defense
Safety Ji’Ayir Brown forced a fumble by Raiders running back Dylan Laube. Defensive lineman Robert Beal Jr. was immediately on the ball to recover. Through the air, cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. intercepted Carter Bradley’s pass in the end zone as the Raiders were close to taking the lead. At that point in the fourth quarter, the score remained 24-21 in favor of San Francisco.
Defensive lineman Leonard Floyd made a strong tackle on third down and cut back to force the Raiders to punt. Floyd later suffered a knee injury and head coach Kyle Shanahan said he will undergo an MRI to determine the severity, as will fellow defensive lineman Yetur Gross-Matos, who also suffered a knee injury.
