- Work on Top Gun: Maverick resumed in 2017 when the studio hired Joseph Kosinski as director. Previously, Kosinski had a meeting with Cruise on the set of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, where he presented the concept, poster and title of Top Gun: Maverick. He also came up with two ideas that eventually made it into the final version of the script, i.e. the movie. The first is the protagonist’s complicated relationship with the son of his former partner, the second is Maverick’s current position in the secret Darkstar project. After hearing Kosinski’s ideas, Cruise contacted Paramount studio executives saying he wanted to film.
- Tom Cruise chose the name of the movie as Top Gun: Maverick because he didn’t want a number in the title.
- Filming took place from May 2018 to April 2019 in California, Washington and Maryland. It was filmed aboard the modern American aircraft carriers USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Theodore Roosevelt, as well as at the US Naval Air Station San Diego, California, and Oak Harbor, Washington.

The only functional fighter jets are in use in Iran, but the filmmakers were not able to access them due to sanctions. With the help of the U.S. Navy, they obtained at least a non-functioning F-14 A, which was loaned to them by the San Diego Air and Space Museum.
- All of the flying F-14 and Su-57 fighters in the film are the result of high-end computer-generated digital effects. All F/A 18 aircraft in action were played by a single fighter, which was subsequently digitally “multiplied”.
