Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) loves flying fighter jets to death. So much so, in fact, that he has been successfully resisting promotion for over thirty years, because it would drive him out of the cockpit and into a warm office. In addition, Maverick has always been a magnet for trouble, which is also quite impossible with an army career.

However, the pilot is brilliant, perhaps the very best, and that is why he receives an offer to become an instructor of elite fighters from the Top Gun program, to prepare him for a task that falls into the category Mission Imposssible. In addition, Maverick will have to handle one difficult private mission. One of the pilots he is supposed to prepare for action is i Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller)the son of his friend and navigator Goose.

Connoisseurs of the first Top Gun know that Goose was killed when he unsuccessfully ejected from an uncontrollable fighter piloted by Maverick. And his son blames him for his father’s death. Maverick doesn’t want Bradley to suffer the same fate as his father at any cost. At the same time, he realizes that the probability that one of the pilots will not survive the planned air operation is not small at all.

  • The soundtrack to the original Top Gun is just as famous as the film itself. Among the biggest hits is the song Take My Breath Away by the band Berlin. The orchestral soundtrack was composed by Harold Faltermeyer (Beverly Hills Cop, Tango and Cash), who also worked on the sequel with Hans Zimmer, Lorne Balfe and Lady Gaga, who also sang the title song Hold My Hand. Another song, I Ain’t Worried, was composed by the rock group OneRepublic, and the original hit Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins will be heard in the film.

  • Work on Top Gun: Maverick resumed in 2017 when the studio hired Joseph Kosinski as director. Previously, Kosinski had a meeting with Cruise on the set of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, where he presented the concept, poster and title of Top Gun: Maverick. He also came up with two ideas that eventually made it into the final version of the script, i.e. the movie. The first is the protagonist’s complicated relationship with the son of his former partner, the second is Maverick’s current position in the secret Darkstar project. After hearing Kosinski’s ideas, Cruise contacted Paramount studio executives saying he wanted to film.
  • Tom Cruise chose the name of the movie as Top Gun: Maverick because he didn’t want a number in the title.
  • Filming took place from May 2018 to April 2019 in California, Washington and Maryland. It was filmed aboard the modern American aircraft carriers USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Theodore Roosevelt, as well as at the US Naval Air Station San Diego, California, and Oak Harbor, Washington.
  • Tom Cruise organized a three-month training camp for the other actors, during which they got used to aerial acrobatics, gravity overload and learned to control the camera themselves, which later filmed them in the cockpit of a fighter jet in flight.
  • During filming, 20 Super Hornet fighter aircraft were used in the single-seat version of the F/A-18E and the two-seat version of the F/A-18F, which belong to the US Navy. The planes were rented with their professional military pilots. The filmmakers paid $11,374 for each flight hour. F/A-18E single-seat fighters appear in external aerial shots. Two-seater F/A-18Fs were used in shots with actors in the cockpit. One of them was equipped with special cameras that filmed the actors in the back seat.
  • The then modern F-14 Tomcat fighter jets appeared in the first Top Gun. Using them again in a sequel would be very difficult, according to production designer Jeremy Hindle, because these machines have already been decommissioned in the US and there is not one in the United States that still has a working engine. The only functional fighter jets are in use in Iran, but the filmmakers were not able to access them due to sanctions. With the help of the U.S. Navy, they obtained at least a non-functioning F-14 A, which was loaned to them by the San Diego Air and Space Museum.
  • All of the flying F-14 and Su-57 fighters in the film are the result of high-end computer-generated digital effects. All F/A 18 aircraft in action were played by a single fighter, which was subsequently digitally “multiplied”.
  • The film produced more than 800 aerial shots, which is more than all the shots taken during the filming of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy combined.
  • Real engineers from the arms company Lockheed Martin participated in the design of the fictitious aircraft of the secret Darkstar project.
  • The film premiere was originally scheduled for July 2019, but due to complex action scenes and the subsequent covid pandemic, it was postponed several times. During the pandemic, several streaming companies tried to buy the rights to release the film online. But all offers were rejected – Tom Cruise adamantly insisted that Top Gun: Maverick be given an exclusive theatrical release.
  • The film’s budget is estimated at $170 million to $177 million. It grossed $1.496 billion in theaters worldwide. It became the second highest-grossing film of 2022, by far the highest-grossing film of Tom Cruise’s career, and is considered a huge hit. The famous director Steven Spielberg even called Top Gun: Maverick the film that saved all of Hollywood after the pandemic.
  • Many film critics have written about the sequel Top Gun: Maverick as being better and better than the original Top Gun.

The film is broadcast on the evening of August 25 on Prime.
