Yes, is it Christmas already? Or why else would the whole family come together at home? At least the family of the band 01099. The three rappers Gustav, Paul and Zachi played on Friday evening on the banks of the Elbe. “The first time,” they say on stage. The fans are their family. The band repeats this throughout the evening. “You are our family,” “01099 is the family” or “Thank you – you are our family.”

It has everything that belongs to a real family celebration: presents, surprises, games, stories from the past and political discussions. The relatives are almost 12,000 people. The concert is sold out.

01099: Team building for the whole family

The whole evening is a tribute to their hometown. The band doesn’t need long to make it clear: their songs are about the city they grew up in, and that is Dresden. It’s not without reason that their band name is 01099 – the postcode for Dresden’s Neustadt district.

The fans of 01099 are young and female. Many have prepared posters.

The fans are young and female. Most are under thirty. Some are so young that they have their parents with them. Hip hop is not really popular with parents, because the lyrics are often sexist. The band, founded in 2018, does without it and instead sings about love and life.

The song “2000s” is dedicated to all those who were born around the turn of the millennium. “This & That” is the anthem for Dresden. The city says hello back: the Saxon steamship company insists on blowing its whistle as it sails past.

Between songs, the crowd is fired up. The rappers throw shirts into the crowd. Zachi then lets himself be carried through the fans in an inflatable boat to get a flag. It’s a competition, because the goal is to beat a time from a previous concert. In just under 40 seconds, he’s back on stage. The fans have done it. Team building for the whole family.

01099: Guest with ski goggles and emotional words

They also talk about the past. How they went to the film nights on the banks of the Elbe as children and how their video for the song “Kolibri” was made just a few meters away. But the band also makes a political statement: “Dresden is colorful and tolerant.” The guests then chant “fuck the AfD.”

They jump around the stage, rapping every song with such energy as if it were the last of the evening. Then the 01099ers announce two guests. Firstly, part-time band member Daniel comes on stage and delivers a first-class jazz number on the horn.

01099: Physical contact with fans

Secondly, there was a surprise guest that nobody would have expected that evening. A blond man with ski goggles appeared from the right edge of the stage. Ski Aggu has now established himself in rap, and played as the opening act for the 01099ers a few years ago. Now he’s on stage. “A deep friendship has developed,” he says on stage, and “the guys have helped me get on board.”

He is also not suitable for young people, although he is known for completely different lyrics. A short time later, the other three are back on stage. “I miss the guys, the stage is so big,” says Ski Aggu. The four then perform “Flasche kreist” together before he leaves the Dresden band alone again.

The later the evening, the more uninhibited it becomes. There are big hugs on stage and the three rappers also get very close to the fans, let them touch them and hold the microphone to the front rows. In addition to well-known songs such as “Cider” and “Durstlöscher”, they play the brand new song “Haare trocknen”, which was only released on Friday. For many fans, it’s an early Christmas.
