Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges was born on August 24, 1899 in Palermo, Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA). From a very young age he showed his great interest in reading, which led him to venture into writing Essays in various literary magazines. In 1923 he published his first work, a book of poems called Fervor of Buenos Aires, which helped him gain popularity and meet some Argentine authors, such as Adolfo Bioy Casares. Both collaborated on different works.
Borges began teaching English literature at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and was soon elected president of the Argentine Society of Writers and director of the National LibraryThe following years meant great growth in his career as a writer, with the book Inquiries1925, and Story of an eternityfrom 1936. He achieved international recognition with titles such as Fictions, The figure y The book of imagined beings. However, one of his greatest successes was The Aleph, which he published in 1945 together with the magazine Sur.
Throughout his career, Borges received great recognition and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature on several occasions, although he never won this award. One of the most important moments of his career was in 1979, when he won the Miguel de Cervantes Prizeone of the highest distinctions of the Spanish language, for its contribution to culture.
Between 1967 and 1979 he had a romantic relationship with Elsa Helena Astete Millán. In the mid-70s he met Maria Kodamawith whom he began a relationship and married on April 26, 1986. The legendary Argentine author passed away on June 14, 1986 in Geneva, Switzerland, where his remains rest.
Borges’ work transformed the fantasy genre and promoted magical realism in Latin America. His books are the subject of study and inspiration for millions of people around the world.
