Verstappen after P2 in qualifying: ‘Winning? You have to be realistic’

Can Max Verstappen win for the fourth time in a row in Zandvoort on Sunday? The Red Bull driver says he will go for it. But immediately after qualifying he already said that he thinks winning will be difficult. “If you are more than three-tenths of a second behind after qualifying, you have to be realistic.”

Verstappen saw Lando Norrris take pole position with a big lead, but the Dutchman was pleased that he managed to stay ahead of Oscar Piastri in the other McLaren. “This was the maximum,” said Verstappen. “In that sense I am happy with second place.”

The ‘splitting’ of the two McLarens gives Verstappen a better chance of winning than if he had to start third behind Norris and Piastri. However, a good car is the most important thing on Sunday. “It was sometimes a bit of a fight with the car,” Verstappen said about that. “It’s still not easy to drive, but hopefully we have a good car in the race.”

The wind also made it difficult. “The gusts of wind, every lap was different. That’s also why a second place is fine, at least we’re on the first row.”
