The parish of Sant’Anna di Fiano-Fosso Imperatore, in Nocera Inferiore, has sparked controversy with the decision to invite Rita De Crescenzo, the popular Neapolitan tiktoker, as the protagonist of one of the events of the civil program of celebrations in honor of Maria Santissima di Materdomini led by Monsignor Mario Ceneri. De Crescenzo’s performance is scheduled for Sunday evening, at 10:30 p.m., but the choice has already raised much criticism.
The tiktoker is in fact known not only for her popularity on social media, but also for her judicial past and a present that many consider far from being a positive example, especially for young people. In an interview with “Le Iene” she said that she was 12 years old when she got pregnant by a man from the Contini clan. In 2017 she was arrested for drug dealing by the Elia clan, which also involved her 12-year-old son: after those accusations, she lost parental authority. Then there is the episode from last January, when De Crescenzo, with about fifty people in tow, railed – with a live social media broadcast, against the Naples traffic police who had tracked down her minor son driving a scooter without a license after running away from a family home months earlier.
The decision to involve her in a religious context, complete with a poster by the Neapolitan TikToker with the words “and the Madonna accompany us” written underneath, has raised questions about the coherence of the values that should be promoted on such occasions.
