Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab announced Thursday that investigations into alleged electoral crimes committed by opposition groups in connection with the presidential elections held on July 28 will advance.

Saab made the statement after the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) issued a ruling confirming the results of the elections that declared Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro the winner.

The Supreme Court announced that it would forward the ruling to the Attorney General’s Office so that it can be incorporated into the investigations being carried out by the Public Prosecutor’s Office into alleged electoral irregularities.

In this context, Saab said that the ongoing investigation aims to determine whether opposition groups committed crimes such as usurpation of functions and conspiracy.

Saab said that in parallel with these alleged events, a violent plan was developed to “ignore the legitimate authority to issue the results.”

Regarding the ruling issued by the TSJ, Saab described it as “a truly significant ruling, historic for the country,” stressing that it is “obligatory to comply with all its parts.”
