Doctors in seven countries have begun testing a lung cancer vaccine. Experts are positive and say that the view is novel, because they believe that the vaccine could save thousands of lives.
Lung cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. According to the Dutch Cancer Society, 14,800 Dutch people are diagnosed with this type of cancer every year. In addition, it is also difficult to cure because it is often discovered late.
Jabs are now being tested on 130 patients in the US, UK, Germany, Poland, Spain, Turkey and Hungary. These are lung cancer patients in various stages; both people who have had radiation or surgery, to people with less advanced lung cancer. The first injection was given last week.
Doctors are positive about the trial phase and especially about the vaccine’s ease compared to other cancer treatments. Siow Ming Lee is an oncologist at UCLH in London and she leads the research in the United Kingdom. “This technology is the next big step in the development of cancer treatment,” he said The Keeper.
Lee vaccinated a 67-year-old man with lung cancer. His treatment lasts about a year. He will receive weekly injections for the first six weeks, then every three weeks.
As this is still the testing phase, it is not clear when the next phase will start. Testing and then bringing new vaccines to market can often take years.
