Sheinbaum, president-elect, receives certificate of majority

The Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF) granted the certificate of majority to Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, with which she officially becomes the president-elect of Mexico and can take office on October 1 as the first woman to assume this position in the country, in addition to doing so with the highest number of votes in history.

In the name of parity, inclusion and legality, the presiding magistrate of the highest electoral body, Mónica Soto Fregoso, pointed out that the arrival of Sheinbaum Pardo to the Executive Branch “removes the veil from patriarchy” and embodies the advancement of Mexican women in the country’s public life.

In a solemn session attended by special guests, officials from the president-elect’s cabinet, as well as the ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation and electoral counselors of the INE, the presiding judge asserted that this act will be recorded in Mexican history, because “the glass ceiling has been broken.”

In a speech lasting almost half an hour, Soto Fregoso recounted the electoral process, lamented the murders of candidates “whose deaths were silenced,” but noted that not even these events “overshadow the fact that Mexico has the first female president of the nation by citizen vote.”

“Mexico has broken the glass ceiling. With this session we have reached the fourth and final stage of the 2024 electoral process, in which the formal certificate of majority will be delivered to Claudia Sheinbaum,” she said at a formal ceremony in which she highlighted the role of women in public life.

In this election, he stressed, more women voted and although the composition of the higher chamber could not act in its entirety, this did not prevent it from fulfilling “fully in time and form for the declaration of validity.”

In her speech, the judge highlighted the struggle of women, who had to wait more than 100 years since the first time women asked for the right to vote and that is why this court judged “with purple glasses.”

She then handed over the certificate and warmly embraced the president-elect, who also appeared excited and upon leaving the plenary hall did not hesitate to take some selfies with women who work at the TEPJF, then asked for her husband’s hand and walked towards the lenses of the media cameras to show her constancy accompanied by a smile in which she reflected her excitement at being the first female president of Mexico.

Presiding Judge Mónica Soto welcomed Sheinbaum Pardo to the premises, who arrived accompanied by her husband Jesús María Tarriba.

The ceremony was attended by, among others, some members of his cabinet, such as Marcelo Ebrard, Ernestina Godoy, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Mario Delgado, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, and Lázaro Cárdenas Batel, as well as special guests such as the elected Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, the writer Elena Poniatowska, the former senator Jesusa Rodríguez, Ricardo Monreal, Gerardo Fernández Noroña and Manuel Velasco, former candidate for the presidential nomination on behalf of the Green Party.

Also present were the ministers Yasmín Esquivel Mossa and the president of the SCJN, Norma Lucía Piña, as well as the president of the National Electoral Institute, Guadalupe Taddei.

Sheinbaum Pardo, who was a candidate for the coalition Let’s Keep Making History, is expected to take office on October 1, for the period that will end on September 30, 2030.
