NBCUniversal Local Impact Scholarship Winners – Telemundo New York (47)

New York, NY – Continuing their long-term investment in the communities we call home, Telemundo 47/WNJU, NBC 4 New York/WNBC and Comcast NBCUniversal announced the winners of their annual grant competition – the NBCUniversal Local Impact Grants. More than $227,000 in unrestricted funds were awarded to five nonprofit organizations serving New York, New Jersey, and Fairfield County, Connecticut, all of which demonstrated a clear commitment to addressing neighborhood needs. Since 2018, Telemundo 47 / WNJU, NBC 4 New York / WNBC and Comcast NBCUniversal have donated more than $1.5 million to 37 non-profit organizations through this campaign.

“Across the tri-state, the community non-profit fills an important gap for many families. Their work meets basic needs, expands access to personal and professional growth, and improves local communities. The winners of our Local Impact Scholarships reflect the best of this critical services sector and we are proud to support them,” said Cristina Schwarz, President and CEO of Telemundo 47.

In its seventh year, the grant competition offers unrestricted funding to nonprofit organizations providing critical support to Tri-State communities in the areas of education and youth empowerment, next generation storytellers, and community engagement. The application period for 2024 eligible 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations began on March 19 and ended on April 19.

“The winners of our Local Impact Grants are fantastic. Their efforts help families live safely in their homes, connect children to new educational opportunities, and ensure that the most vulnerable among us have access to vital services. The funding awarded through our grant competition will continue this important work, which is creating positive change and making a difference in the tri-state,” said Eric Lerner, President and CEO of NBC 4 New York.

Tri-state beneficiaries include:

Long Island Joint Reconstruction: $100,000

Through joint volunteer work with more than 80 certified volunteers, Rebuilding Together Long Island offers free manual repairs to low-income homeowners. All volunteers use their own cars, gasoline, and personal tools for this service.

Volunteers fix plumbing and electrical problems, do carpentry work, repair or replace floors, windows, doors and locks. For seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities, volunteers also build wheelchair ramps, install grab bars and handrails, convert bathtubs to showers, and install toilets and ADA level sink.

NBCUniversal funds will be used to purchase construction materials, such as wood for wheelchair ramps, pipe for plumbing repairs, and other electrical and carpentry materials needed to keep Long Islanders safe in their homes.

City Living NY: $60,000

City Living NY works to change the outcomes and experiences of youth after leaving foster care, as well as contributing to a growing community and support network for youth with shared experiences. The New York-based organization accepts referrals from youth up to age 26 and works to fill the critical void left in the foster care system by providing the tools and the support necessary for a successful transition to independence.

Programs offered by City Living NY address immediate housing and household goods/furniture needs and offer personalized assistance in achieving educational, employment and personal development goals. In addition, the organization offers training workshops on financial literacy, nutrition, job readiness, and self-care.

The NBCUniversal funding will be used to expand and improve a variety of education and employment services. This includes workshops that provide recognized certifications in high demand fields such as CPR, HVAC, Food Service and Hospitality, Electrical Training Courses, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Security Guard Training, Assistant Certified Nursing (CAN), Birth Doula Certification, OSHA Safety Courses, and more. The money awarded will also help young people running their own small businesses with different types of support, including supplies and advice. A portion of the money will go toward the young people’s educational needs, such as college tuition, access to preparatory classes, study materials, test fees, and post-certification job placement assistance.

Village Children: $25,000

Clann a Bale aims to close the academic skills gap of each child and address social issues that prevent children from focusing on education. In Sunset Park (Brooklyn), tutors are fluent in Spanish and Mandarin, the most spoken languages in the area, and receive comprehensive training in education and mental health from experts.

The organization’s Create Success program serves low-income youth between the ages of 4 and 19 who are at risk of failing in school, particularly in immigrant communities where lack of parent training and poor English proficiency make it difficult to help their children with homework or communicate with teachers. Their approach to providing remedial education services in collaboration with neighborhood schools and mobilizing parents to be involved in their children’s academic journey has been successful.

The NBCUniversal funding would be used to create smaller instructional environments for students. This will improve the effectiveness of academic training by allowing for more personalized attention, encouraging higher levels of student engagement and success. Funds will also be allocated to ESL teaching and professional training to help educators overcome special situations, including IEP (Individualized Education Programs) issues.

Josephine Place: $22,272

Josephine’s Place provides a variety of services to women living around Elizabeth, New Jersey. With a small staff, the organization relies on volunteer-led programs that provide unique learning experiences for participants. 98% of the women who come to Josephine’s Place are recent immigrants, many of whom speak very little English and are often fleeing from difficult situations.

English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are offered, along with computer training, employment preparation, and tutoring. Support groups are also offered to victims of domestic and interpersonal violence, as well as mothers of children on the autism spectrum.

NBCUniversal funding will be used to add instructors to meet the growing demand for ESL and computer science classes. The funding will also be used to purchase various materials used in Josephine’s Place programs, such as books, teaching materials, brochures, notebooks and others.

Hour: $20,000

Based in Fairfield County, INTEMPO serves low-income children primarily from immigrant backgrounds and underrepresented communities in the arts. The organization offers multicultural music education services that develop emotional, cognitive and behavioral skills. Students learn to play the violin, viola, cello, guitar, piano and charango, sing choral music and compose music digitally.

The group ensures that disadvantaged children have the same opportunities to learn to play musical instruments as their wealthier peers. These benefits include strengthening memory and concentration, strengthening language and reading skills, a positive sense of identity and belonging, agency and autonomy, and developing social-emotional skills. 95% of the 140 students who attend the INTEMPO School of Music come from immigrant/Latino backgrounds and have obvious financial need.

NBCUniversal’s funding would be used to support the group’s after-school and summer music camp programs. This includes small group music lessons, private lessons, audition preparation, ensemble classes, concert preparation and performance, youth mentoring, and mentoring and literacy.

NBCUniversal’s 2024 Local Impact Grants provide $2.5 million in funding to nonprofits serving one of Telemundo and NBC broadcasters’ 11 U.S. markets, which are New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Boston, Washington, DC, San Francisco, Miami, San Diego and Hartford, Connecticut.
