Since the previous MPOX outbreak in 2022, around 1,300 people in the Netherlands have contracted the virus. As a result of that number, the approximately 100,000 vaccinations should be ‘more than enough’, according to the RIVM spokesperson.
A new variant of the MPOX virus has emerged in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries and appears to be more infectious and pathogenic than previous variants. The World Health Organization WHO has declared the outbreak an international emergency. The new variant was also reported in Thailand on Thursday. There are no known diseases in the Netherlands.
