At the beginning of his press conference known as La Mañanera, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) expressed his pleasure at the fact that Martí Batres Guadarrama, current Head of Government of Mexico City, will be part of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s expanded cabinet for the period 2024-2030.
“Yesterday I also learned that Martí will continue working, an exceptional public servant,” the federal president stressed.
In front of the press gathered in the Treasury Room of the National Palace, the founder of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) highlighted that the future General Director of the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) has been part of the transformation movement for many years, which is why he was pleased that he was joining the project of the former head of government of the city.
As if that were not enough, the Tabasco native also highlighted the qualities of the capital’s leader, which attracted attention as he insisted that he is an honest person with values, which led him to emphasize that people with this type of profile are what is needed to integrate the next cadre of officials, a fact that could be translated as a legacy of his administration.
“Martí is a comrade in the struggle for many years, well prepared; he is a master of social sciences, not only of his law degree, Martí is a person with a lot of political culture, very well prepared, also honest, with convictions. It is very pleasing that cadres have been trained for public administration, for politics, and we must continue to train more cadres for the noble profession of politics and train them with the new principles of honesty, of love for the people, in order to move forward,” concluded the president.

“I have known him for many years, we both participated in the student movement, I was a student at the Faculty of Sciences at UNAM, studying Physics, and Martí was in Prepa 7, he was a representative to the University Council. We have known each other since then, he is a first-class colleague, he has a long history in politics and in academia,” said the president-elect.

For his part, Batres Guadarrama thanked the government of the first female president of Mexico after his appointment for inviting him to collaborate in the development of the country, and therefore promised that he will work hard to fulfill his assignment and continue with the construction of a welfare state, following the line of the Fourth Transformation. According to the official himself: “It is about continuing to contribute to the construction of a welfare state, a historic task that began with the Fourth Transformation. And this implies the construction of the pillars of that state, which are health, education, work, housing and social security.”
During his speech, he stressed that one of the fundamental pillars is the nationalization of ISSSTE, which has historically faced privatizations and outsourcing of services despite being a public institution.
“It is important to continue nationalizing ISSSTE and its services that were previously privatized and subcontracted despite being a public institution,” he stressed.

The current head of the capital’s government also addressed the state workers, emphasizing the philosophy of putting the ISSSTE at their service. He mentioned the importance of remembering the struggles of the teachers’ movement, which in the past demanded better working conditions and of which his parents were part. Martí Batres stated: “The very nature of the ISSSTE is the result of the struggle of the teachers’ movement that demanded better working conditions, of which his parents were part.”
